XTC

XTC Back catalog is finally up on Rhapsody!

I was 8 years old the first time I heard XTC's 'Generals and Majors' in 1980. Its full-on herky-jerkiness appealed to me as one of the most goofy and fun songs I'd ever heard, and it's always had a special, sentimental place in my musical heart. Despite that, I never owned any XTC albums besides their 1986 masterpiece 'Skylarking' and their recent TVT CDs. I've been dying to explore their history since I signed up for Rhapsody a couple years ago, but until yesterday, only those TVT records were listed in the Rhapsody system.

Obviously, I was happy when I found all the XTC albums listed when I check the "Just Added" section this morning. This 148 song playlist contains all their tracks available for full streaming access. I excluded the 30-second samples of songs for purchase only, which does eliminate some classics (Dear God, Ballet for a Rainy Day and about 35 others). Instead 'Dear God' is represented by Sarah McLaughlin's cover from the 1995 XTC tribute disc 'Tesimonial Dinner.' I also include all the tracks from that disc, which features covers by some mid-90s alt-rockers like Freedy Johnston and Spacehog.

Hope you like it.

Atilla

Atilla - Amplifier Fire

If you like Benevento/Russo, you must...must hear Atilla at least once. They were an organ/drum who released one self-titled album in 1970. Oh yeah -- their organist was Billy Joel.

Billy's new box set 'My Lives' features one Atilla track called 'Amplifier Fire.' You just have to hear it.

The review of Atilla at Allmusic.com begins as follows...

'Many critics, fans, and college students have spent hours debating the serious question of what the worst album in the history of rock actually is. One listen to Attila would provide them with a definitive answer. Attila undoubtedly is the worst album released in the history of rock & roll — hell, the history of recorded music itself. There have been many bad ideas in rock, but none match the colossal stupidity of Attila. There's a reason why they're the only heavy rock organ-and-drums duo in the history of rock & roll — it's an atrocious combination.'
